Discover the Charm of Veysonnaz, Switzerland: Resort Review

In Switzerland’s Valais region, the modest, family-friendly mountain resort of Veysonnaz looks out over the Rhone Valley. With access to 412 km of slopes, it is located in the centre of the 4 Valleys, the largest ski region wholly in Switzerland.

However, Veysonnaz is a place that can be enjoyed all year long due to the average 300 sunny days per year that the town enjoys. There is also a lot to see and do in the summer and the autumn. Veysonnaz provides all you want if you’re looking for an energetic alpine experience, particularly one that will appeal to kids.

Who should visit Veysonnaz?

Veysonnaz is better suited for families with young children because it is much smaller and quieter than more well-known resorts in the 4 Valleys, like Verbier. There are lots of family-friendly activities and amenities to keep everyone entertained, but you won’t find a rowdy, late-night party atmosphere here.

It is inevitable that the resort would be crowded around February half term, but if you are not (yet) restricted to travelling during school breaks or can travel later in the season, it’s the perfect place for a family vacation.

Winter activities in Veysonnaz

Skiers and snowboarders will find The 4 Valleys to be a delight, and staying in Veysonnaz will put you in a great location to take advantage of the slopes. The famed Piste de l’Ours, which may be skied at a slower pace if your Ski Sunday invitation is still pending but is a fiendishly difficult competition slope when taken at fast speeds, is located in the Veysonnaz sector. The Skicross World Cup also uses several of the routes in Veysonnaz.

On Tuesday evenings, trails are accessible for ski touring, allowing you to safely explore the forests and slopes while also skiing a thrilling torchlit descent of the Mayens piste. If skiing isn’t your thing, you can still visit Veysonnaz for a very special encounter with Santa Claus in December, have a swim in an indoor pool that’s been heated, or travel one of the four marked snowshoe routes.

From December through April, snowfall is assured; Veysonnaz is truly a winter wonderland.

Summer activities in Veysonnaz

Early in the summer, when the snow has melted, Veysonnaz appears to be an entirely different place.

Mountain bikers and hikers can be seen roaming among the cows, which are wearing cow bells around their necks. If you haven’t brought your own yoga mat, you can borrow one from the Veysonnaz tourist office. You can also go mushroom hunting with a knowledgeable local naturalist along one of the approximately 100 km of designated hiking trails that follow the bisses, irrigation channels that date back to the 14th century.

At the same time, you can discover everything about the local flora and wildlife. Whatever your age or interest, you will have a busy stay because there are kids clubs for youngsters aged 4 and up with activities ranging from treasure hunts and horseback riding to laser games in the forest.

Where to stay in Veysonnaz?

Veysonnaz has just two hotels, totaling 150 bedrooms, so even during peak season there is seldom a sense of overcrowding. The Hotel Chalet Royal, a sizable chalet-style building directly across from the ski lift and with 180-degree views of the Alps, is the ideal spot to stay. Rooms start at CHF 50 per person per night, and it boasts a lovely tiny spa and an outdoor hot tub.

Where to eat in Veysonnaz?

In addition to the four restaurants on the mountainside that may be reached on foot or by skis, Veysonnaz has five restaurants and five pubs. There are two tiny stores, a bakery, and other conveniences if you wish to buy some snacks or delectable delicacies for a picnic.

Favourite restaurants include Remointze in the mountains, where hearty dishes like raclette and fondue are served, and Magrappe, which is ideally located for après-ski at the base of the lifts and has a sunny outdoor terrace for a celebratory beer or three at the conclusion of a successful day on the slopes.

If you’re in the mood for something lighter, Magrappe also has a great selection of salads that are also freshly prepared in their wood-fired pizza oven.
